AÉRO-DÉCARBO group, for greener aeronautics
Published on
AÉRO-DÉCARBO, a committed group of ISAE-SUPAERO alumni concerned about climate change, meets with the Foundation to discuss its commitment to this issue. The Foundation is committed to working alongside ISAE-SUPAERO in the transition to a low-carbon aeronautics sector, and would like to tell you more about these passionate individuals who are driving forward projects for their school.
ISAE-SUPAERO graduates
At a time when the subject of sustainable development is under the spotlight from all sides, and the aeronautics sector is being singled out for criticism, the AÉRO-DÉCARBO collective of engineers – graduates of ISAE-SUPAERO – is questioning its school: how can we train the future engineers and managers of tomorrow’s aeronautics industry by taking account of the environmental dimension and raising awareness of the climate emergency?
“We are deeply convinced that if the School and those who support it, the Foundation and the Alumni Association, don’t take the problem head on by themselves, openly, without taboos or complexes, with pride in all their history and talents, the world will take care of it for them, sooner or later.”
AÉRO-DÉCARBO,
WHO ARE THEY?
The collective, made up of around twenty engineers who graduated from the Institute (initially 2000 and 2001), took shape at the end of 2018 in response to a call for project support from the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation. The AÉRO-DÉCARBO collective’s observation was that “we would be very happy to be able to contribute to a development focus of the ISAE-SUPAERO Foundation on the subject of ecological transition in the aeronautics industry, but we haven’t seen any development focus on the subject”.
In their letter to the Foundation’s Chairman, Philippe FORESTIER, alumni from the 2000 and 2001 graduating classes express their desire to develop this very important area with the Foundation and ISAE-SUPAERO.
At the beginning of 2019, Philippe Forestier will be meeting members of the collective to discuss these issues and explore the field of possibilities together. The Foundation will be helping to facilitate meetings with the Institute’s players on the subject.
Twice the collective returns to the ISAE-SUPAERO campus to carry its message and collaborate with the Institute and the Foundation, and above all, to meet the students who are and will be the voices of tomorrow. In line with its determination to contribute to the changes that will lead to greener aeronautics, the Foundation will be incorporating these aspects into its raison d’être this spring, and aims to strategically direct its future missions in this direction.
The Foundation’s raison d’être
“The Foundation works to develop the Institute’s influence and global leadership, by proposing and accelerating the realization of innovative projects that contribute to a sustainable world.”
Aligned with the collective on these environmental issues, the Foundation wishes to go even further and specifically support projects within the Institute in this direction.
The School is committed to The Shift Project by signing and supporting the appeal: “TO TRAIN ALL HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS ON CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL ISSUES”, and the Foundation would also like to get involved.
To give substance to this momentum and bring together the various student and alumni initiatives, the AÉRO-DÉCARBO collective, the School and the Foundation are inviting students to sign the student manifesto for an ecological awakening, which now has 97 signatories from ISAE-SUPAERO.
At the start of the 2019 academic year, all 1st year engineers at the Institute will be made aware of climate issues through a 3-hour workshop led by the Association La Fresque du Climat. Part of the Foundation’s team will take part in these workshops and receive training.
The Foundation will do everything in its power to ensure that the Institut, like X and Sciences Po, makes a solemn commitment to this theme.
A WORD FROM AÉRO-DÉCARBO
“We believe that aeronautics schools in general, and ISAE-SUPAERO in particular, are the ideal places to imagine the technologies and uses of tomorrow, integrating the climate parameters now recognized by all and the new relationship to the world that follows. What’s more, we believe that embracing this change of direction would open up exciting prospects for this curriculum.
“We were very proud to listen to our fellow student Thomas Pesquet (S2001) blaze this trail in his graduation speech for the class of 2018. We would be even prouder to see ISAE-SUPAERO shine with the dedication, intelligence, ambition and humanity it has always shown, as the bridgehead for the aviation of the future in a decarbonized world.”
