A day of disability awareness with OSE ISAE-SUPAERO
Published on
On Thursday, April 4, 2024, the OSE l’ISAE-SUPAERO equal opportunities program held a disability awareness day on the CREPS campus in Toulouse and on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus.
A day dedicated to raising awareness of disability among secondary school students, with numerous sports activities and discovery workshops.
Nearly a hundred middle and high school students attended the event:
- 5 plants mobilized
- 10 student volunteers to liven up the day
- 6 activities on offer
On the program:
At 9am, the first schoolchildren were welcomed at the CREPS (Centre de Ressources, d’Expertise et de Performance Sportive) in Toulouse. After being divided into groups, they attended 3 different workshops, including introductory activities in cecifoot (blind soccer), para-handball, goal ball, torball and handi-athletics. They were also offered workshops on the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and a disability quiz.
In the afternoon, the students attended a conference introduced by Ambroise Daudin, a player on the French GoalBall team, who shared his background and motivation.
Focus on Lycée des Arènes:
As part of Disability Awareness Day, the group of tutored students from Lycée des Arènes decided to organize a day of team building. The students took part in the day-long event held on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus from 9am to 3pm.
They then benefited from a 2-hour tutoring session at the Institute with 3 student tutors: in dedicated rooms and lecture halls on campus, the students were able to take advantage of this setting to work on math, physics, SVT or finalize their Parcoursup applications.
The day ended with a trip to the cinema and a restaurant, to bring the day to a close for all concerned: students, supervisors and tutors. They attended a public screening of the Polish film “The Girl and the Peasants”. ABC staff introduced them to the work (rotoscoping technique, real shots then painted) and the students were also able to introduce themselves to the audience in the room.
The students at Les Arènes were particularly moved by Ambroise Daudin’s inspiring account of his journey from top-level sportsman to gradually becoming blind man, which was received with respect and emotion by the students.
Testimonials :
- Danielle, a student at Lycée des Arènes:
” The day gave me the opportunity to share special moments with people we didn’t know. It enabled me to discover new things in the world of handisport, which I’m sure will come in handy in the future. I enjoyed meeting and talking to a top-level athlete. Raising young people’s awareness of this is more than beneficial, as it’s a subject that’s not sufficiently open today. “
- Sarah, teacher at Lycée des Arènes:
” A positive day, full of discoveries for students and teachers alike. It was important to see the students in a different context, to discover them and see them build new relationships.
The tutoring session outside the school was greatly appreciated, as the day’s lessons could be caught up in the lecture hall, with students and teachers present. We (the teachers) are surprised and impressed by the energy students put into their homework during tutoring.
We wanted to organize this day to bring together all levels (Seconde, Première, Terminale), outside high school, around a subject unknown to all. I would like to thank the students and pupils for their commitment. “
- Pauline Simonnet, tutor for the Lycée des Arènes :
” this day focused on sport and disability taught me about sports I didn’t know about in a fun and cheerful way with the tutoring students. In particular, I admired the strength of these sportsmen and women who have managed to get back on their feet, determined to “make it” by surpassing their limits, both mental and physical, while moving towards acceptance of their disability. Discovering the students I tutor outside of the classroom, seeing their amazement at the campus tour and their constant energy made me very happy. “
