6-month internship at Concordia University in Montreal for Miriam

As part of her Master of Science at ISAE-SUPAERO, Miriam chose to go to Canada for her end-of-study internship at Concordia University, in the heart of Montreal. Returning in October 2023, she tells us about her 6 months of discoveries, encounters and learning as she explored the Canadian landscape and culture.
What were your motivations when you arrived at Concordia University?
Ever since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of Canada and its natural landscapes. What’s more, Montreal, headquarters of ICAO and IATA, was the ideal destination to fulfill my ambitions as an aerospace engineer.
How was your stay there?

Je mentirais en disant que mon séjour s’est déroulé à merveille depuis le tout début. Pour m’accueillir, il a eu une dizaine de jours après mon arrivée ou j’ai dû passer pas mal de temps à m’installer correctement et à obtenir les autorisations nécessaires pour accéder au laboratoire où j’étais censée travailler. De plus, j’ai été confronté à un logiciel en cours de développement sans aucune documentation. Au début, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à me faire des amis parmi les gens qui m’entouraient.
Montréal est une grande métropole multiculturelle et le mode de vie dans le centre-ville (où se trouve mon université) est assez animé et stressant. Les gens semblent toujours courir partout et s’occuper de leurs propres affaires. Tout cela n’a pas facilité mon intégration au point ou j’avais peur de ne pas y arriver et j’ai presque souhaité retourner en Europe. Cependant, ce sont précisément ces difficultés qui ont rendu cette expérience unique et fondamentale pour moi, elles m’ont fait mûrir de manière incroyable.
Cette expérience m’a permis de travailler beaucoup sur moi-même en tant que personne et après les trois premiers mois, j’ai noué des liens très enrichissants. L’ambiance de travail est aussi devenue plus conviviale et une fois que j’ai pris contact avec mes collègues, j’ai trouvé des gens extraordinaires, intelligents, inspirants et très gentils.
Pendant l’été la ville change complètement, le soleil réchauffe les rues et les places accueillent des festivals gratuits de toutes sortes. C’était l’occasion rêvée d’entrer en contact avec les habitants de la région. J’ai eu l’occasion de partir à la découverte de l’histoire des autochtones du Québec et des atrocités qu’ils ont subis à travers des expositions muséales étonnantes.
J’ai découvert une communauté très accueillante. J’ai fait du camping et j’ai eu l’occasion de voir les merveilles de la région du Saguenay, qui est absolument magnifique.
What did you gain from your stay?
I had the opportunity to make my dreams come true: to discover the grandeur of nature in Canada (far from the big cities), which is something I find hard to describe in words, and to have the chance, thanks to my Bulgarian friend whom I met at work, to visit the ICAO site guided by a member of the Secretariat.
What’s more, it was the first time since I went to engineering school that I’d been in a predominantly female environment. Strong, determined, committed and courageous women who have taught me a lot.I’m not only honing my technical skills, but also challenging myself to grow and give the best of myself in all aspects of my life.
All this unleashed my potential, which enabled me to believe more in myself and finally succeed in my work, to the extent that I was able to run two workshops for my research team on the software that had given me problems in the first place.
I got to know very different traditions and cultures from all over the world, which helped me open my mind and push back my limits. I’ ll never forget it. Among other things, I have forged a close friendship that has made my departure very difficult, and which I am committed to preserving despite the distance.
What’s next for you?
I now aspire to continue working and taking on new challenges in the aerospace field: it was the umpteenth demonstration that I thrive in this field, wherever I may be in the world.
